Methods in the Art of Taxidermy

TaxidermyCover

When I was still living in Brevard, the new Transylvania County Library building was completed. Not too long later, I went to an old book sale. I think I walked out (numerous trips of course) with about three boxes stacked with books. Methods in the Art of Taxidermy by Oliver Davie might be my favorite find. As you can see, it’s a pretty old book. I love the fact that I can look through something that was printed before my own grandmother was born, and not have it fall apart in my hands (though some pages are falling out). While the subject matter might be a little odd, the book is beautifully illustrated. Even just some detailing on fly sheets is really pretty.

But the best part of the book is the illustrations of the actual taxidermy, all drawn by Theodore Jasper. My favorite might be the elephant.

I’d been meaning to do something with this book for a while, but what finally got me to scan some pages was Chris Thomas’ site, Remember Paper. I went to high school with him at Darlington, and he’s obviously been working in design for a while now. Anyhow, Remember Paper is a great site that reflects on the printed page and different books and magazines. Some of it is not quite safe for work (or prudes), but I really like the site’s focus.

Hopefully once I take some time to get better scans of this book, I can have some nice prints made and then framed. I’d really like to have taxidermy illustrations on my wall.

More Like Christmas

DSC_5375

This year’s Christmas will be a lot different than any I’ve had before.  My parents are going 0ut to Wyoming to spend Christmas with Amanda and Evan. I’ve never spent a Christmas away from my family.  I’m jealous that they get to spend time out in Laramie. I was out there for Christmas two years ago and I loved it.

This past weekend I went down to Roswell to see my parents and see my mom’s side of the family.  Before everyone came over to the house for our annual party, Mom and Dad gave me my gifts, and they were really generous. One of my favorite things they do is give me something small and funny. In the past they’ve given me a Chia pet. This year I got an Eye Grow. It seems like it’s basically a small Chia pet type deal. Anyhow, when I got home yesterday, I watered it and set it going.

I need to set up a light box so I can better photograph stuff.

Found On My Run

Running_1

On a run the other week, I contemplated starting a new website called Found On My Run. I tend to pass by something mildly interesting on each run, and sometimes I’m sure there’s some sort of story behind the items. Anyhow, I thought about a separate website, but I suppose I can just post it all here.

This sign/placard/whatever was once secured to a drain for a sewer in Greenville, but it came off somehow.  It’s been sitting around for months in the same place, and the City has actually replaced it.  For some reason they left this one sitting around. It’s some sort of metal and was stuck to the sidewalk/drain with what looks like Liquid Nails.

Early Morning

I had to get up at 2:45 this morning so I decided to start the day with a fire. I’m glad it’s cold enough for this.

I’ve Been Slacking

DSC_5355_b

It feels sorta lazy to take a photograph of flowers sitting on the table, but it’s better than nothing. I haven’t done much with my camera lately. Not really in the last year, sadly.

Cardon Copy

I stumbled upon Cardon Copy the other day and really enjoyed the work that Cardon Webb had posted.  He takes “the vernacular of self distributed fliers and tear-offs we have all seen in our neighborhoods,” redesigns them, and then replaces the original flier. Aside from the written description, the designs are fun and I liked the contrast of the original fliers with his over-designed versions. Since I’ve been looking for a new project to keep me busy, I decided to give it a shot with a flier from the mailbox area in my apartment complex.

Here’s the original flier:

And here’s my new version:

I’m printing this and posting it in the original spot on Monday.

Taking it Apart

DSC_5325_1

I took apart my old HP laptop, hoping to figure out what is wrong with the plug for the power cord. I think I’ve narrowed it down to one chip that plugs into the motherboard, so after Christmas I will order it and hopefully we’ll soon have two working laptops.

Couldn’t Sleep

Couldn'tSleep2

Last night I couldn’t sleep thanks to a horrible ingrown toenail.  Before I woke up at 1:30, I had a dream that I was cutting it out on my own.  After I woke up I was up for hours.
