Heading to NC

Sara and I are headed up to North Carolina this weekend. I’m running in the Asheville half marathon tomorrow morning at 7:30, and we’ll stay up in Balsam Grove and spend some time with my parents. I’m really excited for the race and ready to see the mountains again.

Well alright

I got some new shoes. Actually I technically got two pairs. My first pair seemed great in the store, but they really hurt when I went out and ran 4 miles. I have been running in Nike Free 3.0s for the past year and a half and it was a huge shock to change to a full support running shoe with a huge heel. I really couldn’t run like I normally do. So I finally returned them and got these. They’re really pretty ugly but they feel great. Honestly, I never thought I’d own anything with a tribal tattoo looking design on it. Anyhow, the half marathon is next weekend. I’m pretty excited and have sorta started tapering on my training. I wasn’t planning on it and said I wasn’t going to try hard and just treat it like a normal training run, but when I thought about it I knew I was lying to myself. I don’t really expect a great time but I know I’m going to run harder than I have in any of my training runs. Considering I did 14 miles on Monday, I feel pretty prepared. I just hope the hills aren’t too terrible.

Great Birthday

This weekend was great. I had some great food, I got to see my grandma and grandpa, and I got a great long run in.

Today, my actual birthday, was great even if I had to work. It was a beautiful day out and I got to have dinner with my parents, grandma, and my uncle and aunt.  I’m pretty stuffed full of food and cake right now though.

Running more

I’ve been running a good bit lately, and I’ve really been enjoying it. While there is a huge difference between my life and job in Greenville, and I am much happier now, I still need to burn off some frustrations. I’m also starting to realize how much of an effect that playing soccer all through my formative years has had on me. I don’t play anymore, but I can still compete and be athletic with running. It’s so weird to not have soccer in my life. I had a few years when I really didn’t mind not playing, but now it’s like every other day that I wish I were playing. I miss so much of soccer, and not just the matches (to be honest, I barely remember any of them anyhow thanks to my godawful memory), but for so many aspects. But running has really filled the gap that competitive soccer hasn’t.

Anyhow, I’ve been training for a marathon, and I’ve just recently signed up for the Asheville half marathon on September 18 thanks to some help from Scott. I know I’m ready for it at this point, but I really want to beat my time from the Atlanta half marathon in 2007. It’s funny to think that I ran that along with Sara Nichols and Matt Schultz. I haven’t seen them in years, and it’s really underlining the fact that time really seems to be speeding up.

I’m not old and don’t think that I’m close to being old. But I do feel like things are slightly speeding by me more and more. I certainly don’t feel like I’m going to be 28 in a week.

Anyhow, I ran ten miles on Sunday. I’ve done more previously, and in some odd circumstances (such as with a broken hand and near blackout drunk on Halloween one year), but this felt a lot better than any previous long run. I wasn’t struggling (or dry heaving) and I felt strong at the finish, like I could have gone a lot farther.

Oh, so the photo. I found this about to fall down a drain while on one of my early morning runs.

Still Growing

Though I have everything in containers, my plants are still growing pretty well. I’ve actually pulled some tomatoes from the plant I bought a while ago, and the first bell peppers are about the size of golf balls now. And I have more basil than I know what to do with. I’ve been trying to take a few more pictures lately, and I’ve been enjoying that but I feel like I never have any time in my day to do anything fun.

I think I’ll go on a long run today.

Found On My Run

I actually found this the same day that I found this little gem. It appears that SGI is a server company. This was sitting in the grass next to the St. Francis Hospital parking lot.

Found On My Run

So I was out running the other day, and passed this by. From a few feet away, it looked pretty odd. After picking it up, it still looked pretty odd. I’ve tried to remove any real identifying info, just because. I really don’t understand the date in the top left though. Is this sheet really 8-9 years old?

Most of the time I just see trash while on my runs around here, but I love finding random stuff like this.

Running!

Between my crazy work schedule and the winter weather, I’ve slowly gotten into bad shape, but lately I’m getting back into a good routine for running. I love it.

Found On My Run

Running_1

On a run the other week, I contemplated starting a new website called Found On My Run. I tend to pass by something mildly interesting on each run, and sometimes I’m sure there’s some sort of story behind the items. Anyhow, I thought about a separate website, but I suppose I can just post it all here.

This sign/placard/whatever was once secured to a drain for a sewer in Greenville, but it came off somehow.  It’s been sitting around for months in the same place, and the City has actually replaced it.  For some reason they left this one sitting around. It’s some sort of metal and was stuck to the sidewalk/drain with what looks like Liquid Nails.

Morning

DSC_5250

I got up at 6 this morning and ran. It’s better than a pot of coffee.
